MAUI FLOW FEST
YOUTH DANCE
Maui Flow Fest is a groundbreaking event designed to address adolescent mental health in an innovative and engaging way, making it the largest mental health event for teens in Hawaii’s history. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Maui, this festival combines high-energy activities (like a high school dance atmosphere), cultural performances, and direct engagement with mental health professionals to create a dynamic, supportive environment for high school-aged youth.
To the teens that attendance Maui Flow Fest, it looks like the biggest high school dance they’ve ever attended! And by far the best! We find the best DJ! The best venue (like the Ritz Carlton), the best food, the best party games (like huge dodgeball game), the best prizes and all while mingling with trained trauma therapists in a non-threatening, non-clinical environment.
Let’s face it, our kids are not going to see school therapists in the office of the therapists. It’s just not happening. There’s a stigma associated with going to see the therapist. It’s intimidating and not something that kids find comfortable.
So we decided to create a comfortable environment, like a huge school dance, and then invite the therapists to be present at the event with ways for kids to connect with a therapist via phone or text, anonymously. Why are we asking kids to step out of there comfort zone and speak to therapists when we should be meeting kids where they stand. We should be meeting kids in the places that they feel most comfortable. In environments that they feel the safest – in their natural habitat. That’s how we can make the most connections with the kids that need the attention.
At Maui Flow Fest our therapists work the photo booth with signs on how kids can connect with a certified therapist anytime they want. The therapists are working the event to create a bridge for our teens to connect with help, should they need it.
Benefits of Maui Flow Fest:
