My Story
A Journey Through Fire and Healing. Alfy Basurto is not only a survivor but a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As the founder and CEO of Rebuild Maui Org, Alfy has dedicated himself to the monumental task of not just reconstructing buildings, but restoring lives in Lahaina, Maui, following the devastating fires of 2024.
Alfy's life took a dramatic turn when the fires swept through his community, leaving him, his wife, and their five children without a home and stripping them of their three businesses and all their possessions. This catastrophic event did more than destroy physical structures; it ignited a personal awakening within Alfy. The trauma of losing everything resurfaced a deeply buried childhood trauma. A memory of sexual abuse by a caregiver, an ordeal he had suppressed for nearly four decades.
Choosing not to let this past define him, Alfy embarked on a courageous journey of healing. He recognized that unaddressed trauma functions like an insidious software running silently in the background, affecting his relationships, behaviors, and reactions in ways he hadn't understood until the fires brought everything to the forefront.
Now, Alfy Basurto has taken his personal narrative public, speaking to audiences about the complex interplay between disaster, trauma, and recovery. His talks delve into how trauma, when not addressed, can compound, much like re-injuring an old wound. He shares his insights on how identifying and confronting his childhood trauma has transformed his life, offering him clarity and control he never knew was possible.
Through Rebuild Maui Org, Alfy extends his personal healing into communal recovery, focusing on holistic support for those affected by the fires. His organization embodies his belief in the power of community, resilience, and the human spirit's capacity to rebuild not just structures, but lives and futures. Alfy’s mission is twofold: to aid in the physical reconstruction of Lahaina and to offer guidance on emotional reconstruction for trauma survivors. His story is one of overcoming, of turning personal pain into a public platform for education, healing, and hope. By sharing how he navigated his path from victim to victor, Alfy Basurto hopes to illuminate the way for others, proving that even from the ashes of despair, one can rise, rebuild, and help others do the same.
